ExpressVPN Review

Express VPN Review, 2019

With the rise in concerns about online privacy and security, products like ExpressVPN are becoming more and more popular. There are also a lot of good ones out there – but there’s also plenty of crap ones.

I’ve actually tried out a whole bunch of virtual private networks. Some have worked okay at encrypting data and generally giving me access to different IPs… However, when it comes to user experience and the sheer amount of services available… This one in particular did not disappoint.

ExpressVPN Review: Features

The first thing I looked at during this ExpressVPN review was who could actually use the service. Happily, it’s a pretty big pool of people – from Android, iOS and Mac users to Windows (that includes the Windows phone… although the setup is that little bit more complicated).

Some more of the features that they boast include:

  • Content from anywhere thanks to their large network of servers from around the globe. Live in a country where certain things are censored? Virtually “teleport” yourself to a place where the content is freely available. This makes it particularly handy for digital nomads who may find themselves stuck from time to time (and yes, it also seems to work well for Netflix).
  • Following the last point, ExpressVPN offers 160 server connections. That’s 94 different countries… So it’s a lot of Internet access.
  • Speed is important… and this VPN lets you test the speed of the server you’re using.
  • The support is fantastic: It’s available 24 hours and I found them very helpful and straight-to-the-point when I had an issue (it was just a corrupted file… but it was solved within the hour).
  • Split tunnelling lets you access the Internet directly will allowing some of your traffic to go through the VPN.

Additional features focus on security:

  • No activity logs.
  • IP address masking.
  • Anonymous browsing
  • Choose your VPN protocol (TCP/UDP, SSTP, PPTP, etc.)
  • A private, encrypted DNS on each server

I didn’t have a problem setting up ExpressVPN. Even when I had trouble with a corrupted file, their customer service rep was extremely helpful and I it running again within twenty minutes. It’s organization isn’t particularly special but it does the job: you pick the server you want from a range of country-specific choices. For the tech-savvy crowd, you can easily configure the app settings through the “Options” menu, where you’ll find a variety of protocols, a kill switch, and DNS leak protection.

If you’re looking for privacy and access to as much of the Internet at possible, its really not a bad choice.

Is ExpressVPN (at least partially) free?

You can indeed get an ExpressVPN free trial… but in order to make use of its full service, you’ll have to pay. Generally speaking, there are often discounts on offer and most virtual private networks don’t really charge a lot for their service anyway. However, I’m not going to lie: I found their prices a bit steep. If performance and security are your main concerns: this could be well worth the price.

You’re also limited to only three simultaneous connections per subscription. You can use this on whatever device you choose, though.

Express VPN cost & quality

Although I’ve just said that Express VPN costs are rather high in comparison but… quality of service trumps others such as Ghost VPN. That was terrible (cheap, but it couldn’t find a suitable server half the time… which makes it pointless).

Bear in mind, if you choose a long-term plan the price becomes quite reasonable – and besides, the company offers excellent deals, so it’s always a good idea to check the latest deals and coupon codes before making your purchase. Most people who choose a VPN will normally want a long-term subscription anyway.

All major credit and debit cards are accepted in addition to a variety of alternative payment methods, such as Paypal, Bitcoin, Giropay, WebMoney, and Paymentwall. It is important to note that only the payment options available in your country will be displayed.

There’s also a 30-day money-back guarantee with a no-questions-asked policy, so if you’re not fully satisfied with the service, you can easily get a refund.
